Most of us know tequila because we use it in margaritas or in shots... but, like whiskeys and rums, a GOOD tequila has character and should be sipped, appreciated, and enjoyed. This seminar will discuss what determines the various "levels" of tequila, what makes something a tequila (as opposed to mezcal), the agave plant, and the various notes and flavors as we taste several tequilas.

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Meet n' Sniff

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab is an independent online retailer of perfume oils with a gothic, literary, and horror theme, and a massive following (of all genders and ages) in the goth and geek communities. BPAL's scent offerings are based on everything from classical legend and the Cthulhu Mythos to the standard RPG classes and Fraggle Rock. Do you already love BPAL? Do you wonder what the fuss is all about? This panel will include an overview of the types of oils offered by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab both thematically and via scent class, with basic explanations of perfume component scent "notes," perfume composition, and perfume oils' exciting and sometimes capricious changes on individuals' skin.

Afterward, we'll pass some scents around for sniffing and testing and maybe even swapping, so if you have a Black Phoenix collection already, please bring things you'd like to swap, or show off your rare scents and drive the rest of us crazy trying to hunt them down later! Bring your BPAL if you have it. We want to maximize the sniffing as well as the meeting! We are in no way affiliated with the Lab!

Mega Ran Q&A

Mega Ran, aka Raheem Jarbo of Philadelphia is arguably the world's most well known video-game influenced performance artist. Since signing an unprecedented licensing deal with international developer Capcom, the former teacher's high-energy shows and fun, nerdy persona have led to world tours, festival and video game tournament performances, and a legion of smart art fans he calls "TeamMega."

Ran continues to bend genre definitions and reality with each release, and the sky is the limit. MegaRan may have traded in the chalk for the microphone, but every song, every lyric, and every appearance is a lesson. School is in. And this is your chance to ask the teacher all of the questions!

Tequila Appreciation

Most of us know tequila because we use it in margaritas or in shots... but, like whiskeys and rums, a GOOD tequila has character and should be sipped, appreciated, and enjoyed. This seminar will discuss what determines the various "levels" of tequila, what makes something a tequila (as opposed to mezcal), the agave plant, and the various notes and flavors as we taste several tequilas.

Ethical Challenges & Responsibilities of Biohackers and Artists

The convergence of biological and digital technologies is one of the most significant aspects of the world we inhabit -- perhaps *the* most significant, since from this convergence we can plausibly extrapolate to near futures featuring everything from the elimination of poverty, want and death to the end of life on earth. This trend has been evident for a while, but CRISPR puts it in our faces.

Unlike, say, nuclear technology, biodigital technology is inherently democratic. We are in a biohacking maker world, and we're not going back.

The positive uses for these technologies are limitless, and many of them easy to imagine. The dangers are a little less obvious, but many of them can be anticipated, and there are certain to be unanticipated dangers as well. The potential for societal disruption, among others, has been widely underestimated.

What ethical responsibilities do biohackers and scientists bear? And do artists and intellectuals, writers in particular, have an obligation to take on these subjects, maybe even provide some guidance?
